Last week I was down in Laguna Beach taking a Gyrotonic Level 2 course to fulfill my CEU’s. Which is slightly ironic, because as a former Master Trainer… these are courses I used to teach. And I’ll say this — I genuinely love the quality of movement the Gyrotonic method can evoke. But there’s a moment that happens in almost every system like this. Where the choreography starts to eclipse the reason it exists. We spent long stretches of time focused on:
And somewhere in there, the actual experience of movement started to slip through the cracks. At one point I found myself blurting out: Because underneath all of it, there’s a quieter question: What is this movement actually trying to give us? The choreography is just the container. The meaning lives somewhere else. And if you prioritize the details before you’ve actually felt the thing — you lose access to the very reason the movement works in the first place. This is exactly why I’ve been working so much with the Yoga Trapeze lately. Not because it’s complex. I don’t need to construct a full sequence. I can place someone in the trapeze, give them a direction — Support → leads to movement Without forcing anything.
